National Missions

  • APPALACHIAN SERVICE PROJECT (ASP) - Mt. Zion has been participating in ASP, a youth mission project, for over 20 years.  Each summer a group of high school youth and adults travels to the mountains of Appalachia for a week working to make homes warmer, safer, and drier.  No construction skills are necessary, just a willingness to serve.  We also build relationships with the families and get to know other volunteers from all over the US.  To volunteer, contact Matt Sherrill, Mt. Zion's Youth Director, at the youth house: 704-892-7825 or email: msherrill@mtzionumc.net.  The dates for the next trip in the summer of 2012 are June 17-23, 2012.  There are 21 spots available, but they are going fast. So if you are a rising 9th grader (and will be at least 14 years old) or older and would like to go, we have a NEW SIGN UP. We need a $50 commitment to reserve your spot and we need it by October 27! Spaces are going quickly, so turn in your money. For questions and more info or to sign up, please contact Matt Sherrill at 704-892-7825 or email msherrill@mtzionumc.net.
  • MAGICAL MOUNTAIN CHRISTMAS (MMC) - Toys, Christmas gifts, food, and clothing are provided to many needy families in the Appalachian mountains through Mt. Zion's Magical Mountain Christmas outreach project.  Through the Appalachian Service Project office, family names and needs are obtained and then made available to congregation members or small groups who then purchase, wrap, and label the gifts.  On the second weekend in December, volunteers comprised of high school youth, adults, and families travel to two ASP centers where a party is provided, the Christmas story is told, Santa visits with the children, and gifts are distributed.  At any time contributions to this outreach project can be placed in the offering or sent to the church office and marked “MMC”.  For more information or to volunteer, contact Elizabeth Coker at elizabethcoker73@gmail.com.
