LOVENOTES - Music for the Unborn Child and Expectant Parents
Gentle rocking.  A  softly hummed lullaby.  The close warmth of a mother’s voice.  Throughout the world, soothing tones and rhythms have been used for centuries to comfort and reassure a restless child.  Lovenotes is music for the unborn child…a structured program that teaches expectant parents to use the language of music to communicate love and reassurance to their unborn child.
This unique program was introduced at Silver Lake College by internationally recognized music educator, Sr. Lorna Zemke.  After teaching the course for a number of years, Sr. Lorna wished to share the program’s relaxing, nurturing and bonding benefits with a wider audience.
Dr. Marcy Mittelstadt, Director of Music Ministries, is fortunate to have been a colleague and friend of Sr. Lorna for many years.  When Marcy heard that the curriculum for this class was now available it felt like a perfect fit for the music ministry program at Mt. Zion UMC.  Mt. Zion presently offers weekly Babygarten classes (music and reading) for babies age 0 -18 months.
Even before a baby is born…. at the end of the fourth month (16 weeks) of pregnancy…the child can hear sounds from the outside world.  By using the voice as the natural instrument, along with folksongs, musical instruments, rhythm and movement, the Lovenotes program:
  • Offers parents an intimate way to relax and experience together the wonder of the life they have created.
  • Establishes a loving communication and a strong bond between the baby and family before birth.
  • Promotes the emotional well-being of parents and child by calming the infant before and after birth.
  • Aids childbirth by teaching parents how to use music to relax during labor and delivery.
  • Enhances the family’s appreciation of music.
Lovenotes consists of 4 lessons containing songs for listening and activities for expectant parents from the fifth month to delivery.    Class size is limited.  If you are interested in participating in this class, please e-mail Dr. Mittelstadt at mmittelstadt@mtzionumc.net.  You do not need to sing well to be an effective communicator with your unborn child.

Babygarten - Ages Birth through 18 months (older babies/siblings enrolled by permission of the instructor)
Babygarten was designed by two librarians who were concerned that young children might not be receiving the exposure to language needed to become competent readers.  Babygarten is much more than a play group!  Infants and their caregivers will share nursery rhymes, songs, and books.  Also participants will get a chance to make fun projects that demonstrate the babies’ developmental milestones-usually a homemade toy or a baby book item.  Many projects will emphasize the importance of reading to babies and parents will learn how to do this most effectively.  Each class will conclude with a free play period and opportunity for care givers to share with each other.  This course will run six weeks.  The class will meet in Room 203 of the Education Building.  You may enter at the ramp to the second floor.
