Ash Wednesday Worship Service-7AM
Wednesday, Feb 22, 2012
07:00 AM - 07:20 AM - Sanctuary
This short service is designed for people going to work. There will prayers, scripture and the imposition of ashes on the forehead.
On Ash Wednesday we reflect on our own mortality and confess our sin before God within a community who does likewise. This service calls the people to come forward and receive a mark made of ashes on the forehead. Ashes have long been a sign of mortality and repentance in the Christian and Jewish communities. We have burned the palm branches from last year’s Palm Sunday service as well as the prayers requests from the past year to make the ashes for this service. It is fitting that we take our place with others throughout the centuries recognizing our common humanity, our sinful nature and our dependence on God’s grace.
Lent is a 40-day period, not counting Sundays, which begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on Holy Saturday. The word Lent means ‘spring,’ the season in which we prepare for Easter. It began as a time of fasting as converts to Christianity prepared for Baptism. Practicing Christians then used this as a time for penance (humbly remembering sins and confessing them). Some hold that because Sunday is not counted in the 40 days, they reflect “Little Easters” so that Lent should be tempered with joyful expectation of the Resurrection.
There is also an Ash Wednesday service at 7PM.

BABYGARTEN - For Infants from birth through 18-months.
Babygarten was designed by two librarians who were concerned that young children might not be receiving the exposure to language needed to become competent readers. Babygarten is much more than a play group! Infants and their caregivers will share nursery rhymes, songs, and books. Also participants will get a chance to make fun projects that demonstrate the babies’ developmental milestones-usually a homemade toy or a baby book item. Many projects will emphasize the importance of reading to babies AND parents will learn how to do this most effectively. Each class will conclude with a free play period and opportunity for care givers to share with each other. This course will run six weeks each season. The class will meet in Room 203 of the Education Building. You may enter at the ramp to the second floor. There is no fee for this class.

We do this by partnering with the Urban Ministries Center in Charlotte. Each night we offer a warm, safe place to sleep and provide 3 meals (dinner, breakfast and a bag lunch) for 10 people who are homeless. There are a number of things that need to come together to make this ministry successful … and that is where you come in! There are many ways that you can volunteer: cooking a warm meal, packing a bag lunch, driving the church mini bus, doing laundry, staying overnight and more. If you are interested in volunteering please email Katie Reimer.

We also build relationships with the families and get to know other volunteers from all over the U.S. No construction skills are necessary, just a willingness to serve. This year we will be going the week of June 17-23rd and have 21 spots available, but they are going fast. So if you are a rising 9th grader (and will be at least 14 years old) or older and would like to go, we have a NEW SIGN UP. We need a $50 commitment to reserve your spot and we need it by October 27! Spaces are going quickly, so turn in your money. For questions and more info or to sign up, please contact Matt Sherrill at 704-892-7825 or email msherrill@mtzionumc.net.
